Engineering Index Backfile Available

Wilson Library is pleased to announce the acquisition of Engineering Index Backfile. EI Backfile allows users to search for information about journal articles, books, conference proceedings, patents, and technical reports included in the print Engineering Index from 1884 to 1969. It contains citations relating to important engineering innovations from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as the development of the first internal combustion engine and the birth of aviation.

EI Backfile complements EI Compendex, the database that covers the engineering literature from 1980 to the present. To search the backfile, visit the databases page on the library website, or click here.

Astrolabe Askew

Working on the Astrolabe

Library employees recently discovered that Astrolabe 1999, the sculpture that hangs on the left side of the lobby area, had come loose from some of its moorings. Thomas Schulte, the Jefferson City-based artist who created the piece, and members of the university's Physical Facilites department removed the artwork completely and then reattached it safely to the wall.

Astrolabe 1999 was commissioned to mark the occasion of the library's renovation. The astrolabe was perfected by the Arabs in the 9th century and was used for measuring the position of celestial bodies, surveying, and navigating at sea. Schulte's work celebrates this technical heritage and the interrelationship between the artistic and the technical.
